one of the parent hard disks is missing. If you want to move your Windows XP Mode Virtual Machine to another box, as I did tonight, you might get an error like: However, in order to save disk space and allow folks to have a base image and multiple XP images, the default disk setting for XP Mode is "differencing." That means that there's a base Windows XP Mode "base" VHD file in "C:\Program Files\Windows XP Mode\Windows XP Mode base.vhd." This file is the base that your instance of Windows XP is, ahem, based on. They are in the Start Menu and you don't have a "VM Window" like you usually see. It can run "seamlessly" which means you can run XP apps within the VM under Windows 7 with complete compatibility and it looks like the apps are running under Windows 7 itself. This "pass" extends to other EoL operating systems such as OS/2, Solaris, BeOS, and even MacOS X 10.9 or lower. One of the great things about Windows 7 is "Windows XP Mode" which is basically that you get a copy of Windows XP that runs under Windows Virtual PC. Windows 7 and Windows 8/8.1 are a different matter, they still have commercial use (even tho they are EoL). They are only have educational and entertainment value at this point. That said, Microsoft was basically giving away Windows XP for free some time ago with their prebuilt XP Mode virtual machine you could download directly from them, so I have no issue with licenses for Windows XP.Īs a point of note, I give a pass on TOS/EULA violations for older operating systems such as Windows 95/98/ME, 2000, XP, or Vista as there is no viable commercial reason to be running those operating systems. I only care about the license keys and such because share those IS an ToS/EULA violation. Distributing/sharing of Windows ISOs is not an EULA violation as far as I'm aware, and Microsoft has existing downloads for most Windows versions already available. I have no issue with sharing Windows ISOs.
